Suisse Normande

Cliffs, river and outdoor thrills in the heart of Normandy

About 1 hour from the gîte, the Suisse Normande is Normandy’s great outdoor playground. This landscape of gorges, limestone cliffs and meandering river — centred on the villages of Clécy and Thury-Harcourt — rivals alpine valleys for nature lovers. Hiking, canoeing, rock climbing, bungee jumping: the Suisse Normande packs every kind of outdoor activity into just a few square kilometres.

What to do?

Hiking — Le Pain de Sucre — the must-do. This rocky peak above a bend in the Orne river offers the most spectacular panorama in the whole Suisse Normande. Allow 1h30 return from Clécy. Waymarked trail, suitable for children from 6–7 years. Don’t miss the Rocher des Parcs and Rocher de la Houle — two other remarkable viewpoints accessible on foot.

Canoeing — descending the Orne by canoe between Pont-d’Ouilly and Clécy is a classic local experience. Several hire companies offer canoes, kayaks and paddleboards with a shuttle back. The course is calm and family-friendly (no dangerous rapids), suitable for children from 6 years old. Allow 2 to 3 hours depending on your starting point.

Rock climbing — the Rochers des Parcs, towering above the Orne at Clécy, are one of Normandy’s most popular climbing sites. Over 200 routes at all levels. Local guides offer introductory sessions for beginners.

Bungee jumping — the Suisse Normande is one of the few places in France offering a bridge bungee jump over a river. An adrenaline experience with stunning views of the Orne gorge as a bonus. Advance booking required; check seasonal opening dates.

Via ferrata — several equipped routes on the cliffs let you progress safely with a harness and carabiners. Suitable from age 10 with supervision. Equipment hire on site.

Mountain biking — numerous waymarked circuits cross the bocage and follow the river. Mountain bike hire available in Clécy.

When to go?

April–October: ideal season for all outdoor activities.

June–August: canoeing and climbing at their best; book bungee jumping in advance.

Spring and autumn: hiking in a beautiful setting, without the summer crowds.

Avoid: after heavy rainfall, the Orne level may make canoeing inadvisable.

Good ideas

Book activities in advance in July–August: guided climbing, via ferrata and bungee jumping often fill up at weekends.

Directions: from the gîte, head towards Caen then Thury-Harcourt (D562). Clécy is 15 km south of Thury-Harcourt. Free parking on the banks of the Orne at Clécy.
